LAVENDER6

Personal upliftment as a gateway
to passing matric.

LAVENDER6 started as a private community response to the disastrous food shortage during COVID amongst kids in Lavender Hill, Cape Town. Today, we support them in finishing school, passing matric, and creating their own future.

"Think back to when you were
a teenager..."

Maybe you wanted to become a doctor, engineer, carpenter, graphic designer - anything you needed more education for. And you hopefully could and did, because you were born on the 'right side' of town. Lavender Hill would be the other side...

Back to school, also for us!

We have to speak and interact with the kids to find out what they want, what their story is, what they dream of... That means for us: more homework and less assumption...

"Don't get trapped in the world
you were born into."

With SA's Youth unemployment rate currently standing at 55%, passing matric exams is the best gateway to further education and training, and finding a job. Vast numbers of learners drop out of high school every year, mostly at the end of Grade 9. What follows is usually an environment of sub-standard living, drugs, alcohol, and the feeling of being useless, being trapped in the world that they were born into.

Love & Care
makes for a good learner.

Lavender Hill, Cape Town. Not on any sightseeing map (although it should be!)... Kids live with 5 or 7 people in small apartments. Calm? Focus on homework? Support? Lavender6 is trying to motivate them, to let them find value and joy in themselves, and to let them take charge of their life. Our approach is powerful as we are pairing the great human resources of our Lavender6 community with the needs and wishes of these little gems in Lavender Hill.

Questions & Answers

All things serious,

We focus on Grade 8 & 9 learners from Lavender Hill.  Learners are eligible for the programme if they show academic & personal potential, but are falling behind in terms of overall motivation.

The programme is 2 years long, divided into 4 semesters (levels).

School reports and performance evaluations by the teachers.

The programme is free for students, provided that they commit to attendance, the principles of Lavender6, and giving their best at school. In their 2nd year, they have to give back to the community by assisting younger learners with their homework.

...but seriously silly!

RAISING FUNDS

Kindly assist us in giving the Lavender6 students care. X

Although Lavender6 is a dedicated, volunteer-based community, we do require regular funding. We need to pay for regular food for the kids, transport, entrance fees on outings, nature camps during school holidays, stationery etc. We would also like to be able to remunerate Lutz Manzelmann, our full-time project manager. All donations will go towards the implementation of the programme (click the Play button on the right). Thank you dearly, for your support.
